Thurso - Surfing

In 2006 Thurso held the world surfing championships.  Thurso is known throughout Britain as a superb surfing venue and surfers can often be seen on the beach at Thurso and Brims Ness.

Thurso had two shops in town which sell surfing gear and are happy to advise on the best breaks.

If you are interested in surfing then this is probably a good place to start:

Loch More - Central Caithness

Loch More offers some lovely walks.  It is in the heart of the Caithness Flow Country and is renowned for the salmon leaps when the salmon are going back up to the loch.

Part of the weir has been built just so the salmon can go up it and it is an amazing sight to watch them leaping up the overflow.

Harbours

There are many beautiful harbours in Caithness.  This one is Lybster harbour where the world Knotty Day championships are held.

Yacht owners the world over converge on Lybster for the event which is well worth going to see.

Lybster also has a superb Heritage Centre which tells the tale of Lybster through it's fishing history.

There are also cameras which can be controlled by the visitors to the centre.  The camera's are normally focussed on bird colonies but you can scan the cliffs using them.

Camster Cairns

These cairns are free to view and if you are doing a tour of Caithness they are a definite "must see".  There are proper paths to the cairns and you can even enter them.

Please be sure to shut the gates to the cairns, to stop the sheep from entering and ruining them.

Find out more about the Camster Cairns  here.

Sculpture, and Scrabster Walk

Looking down over Thurso is a large sculpture. Another lovely walk.

There are also nice walks from Scrabster Harbour.  Go through the harbour up to the lighthouse and there is a path to the left of the house, this walk will take you to the cliff tops above Scrabster and to see Clett Rock.

Clett Rock is interesting, the way the stone is laid down, if you were to go between the cliffs and the rock on a boat, it looks like  you are going up hill!  Very strange!

The Circus comes to town Summer Events

In July there are many different events held in the town, the town Gala is on every year and often a Circus will come to town in the summer as well.

The county of Caithness holds many different events such as the Gala, the County Show and the Halkirk Highland Games
